Fast Checks

RTT path

BTT first, RTT next, then Practical Riding Test within the handbook validity window.

Gear up

Helmet fastened, visible clothing, gloves, footwear, posture, and route planned.

Pre-ride

Fuel, tyres, controls, lights, horn, oil, chain, and brakes.

Lane change

Mirror, signal for at least 3 seconds, blind spot, adjust speed, move, cancel.

Following gap

Use 3 seconds in good conditions; increase the gap when risk rises.

Rain and glare

Slow down, increase stopping distance, use the correct light beam, and stop if visibility is poor.

Setup & Licensing

Handbook pp. 3-5, 19-26

RTT role

RTT checks riding safety, proper techniques, and interaction with other road users before the practical riding test.

Licence classes

Class 2B is the entry motorcycle class; Class 2A and Class 2 require progression.

Protective gear

Approved helmet, clear vision, visible clothing, gloves, and proper footwear reduce injury risk.

Human Factors

Handbook pp. 6-10

Fitness

Do not ride when tired, unwell, angry, worried, or affected by alcohol or drugs.

Blind spots

Use mirrors, then turn your head before changing lane, overtaking, turning, or stopping.

Forces

Speed, friction, tyre pressure, load, and bends affect control and stopping distance.

Power path

Engine power passes through the clutch, gearbox, drive chain, and rear wheel.

Weekly checks

Tyres, brakes, lights, oil, chain, controls, and horn need routine attention.

Pre-ride

Check critical parts before each ride so faults are found before traffic exposes them.

Controls & Braking

Handbook pp. 27-38

Gear changes

Coordinate clutch, throttle, gear pedal, and gradual release smoothly.

Engine braking

Do not pull in the clutch too early when you need engine braking.

Braking

Use progressive braking; harsh braking can lock wheels and cause skidding.

Road Skills

Handbook pp. 39-60

Following gap

Use the 3-second rule in good weather and increase the gap behind heavy vehicles or in poor conditions.

Turning

Prepare lane, signal, blind spot, speed, and gear before the turn.

Roundabouts

Look for traffic already inside, do not enter if the exit is blocked, and signal early to exit.

Defensive & Circuit

Handbook pp. 61-97

Rain

Slow down; wet roads reduce grip and can increase stopping distance.

Road users

Expect pedestrians, cyclists, taxis, and heavy vehicles to create blocked-view hazards.

Circuit

Low-speed courses test posture, rear-brake control, clutch control, and looking ahead.
