Traffic Light Meanings

Vehicle Lights

Use headlights from 7.00pm to 7.00am.
Dipped headlights
Use dipped headlights at night in built-up areas, during rainy weather, behind vehicles, and when meeting oncoming traffic.
Poor visibility
In daytime rain or poor visibility, switch on headlights so other road users can see you.
Interior lights
Do not drive with interior lights on because they reduce external visibility.

Right Of Way

Always give way to traffic on your right at junctions and roundabouts where no signals exist.
Priority
- Major road traffic
- Straight traffic over turning
- Right-turning traffic gives way to left-turning
Uncontrolled junctions
Give way to traffic from your right when going straight across. When turning right, give way to traffic from all directions that has priority.
Roundabouts
Slow down and give way to traffic on your right.
Pedestrian crossings
Slow down, do not overtake, and give way to pedestrians who are still crossing.
Safe Driving Checks

Adjust mirrors and check blind spots by looking over your shoulders.
3-second rule
Keep at least 3 seconds of following distance behind the vehicle in front.
Stopping distance
It increases with speed, road surface, weather, tyre condition, and brake condition.
DIPS
Handbook pp. 6-7What DIPS means
DIPS is the Driver Improvement Points System. Demerit points are given for scheduled offences under the Road Traffic (DIPS) Rules.
Point notices
Motorists are notified after settling offences where demerit points are awarded.
Suspension cue
Receiving 24 demerit points results in licence suspension.
Court cue
When the table says Court, the offence is prosecuted and no composition fine applies.
Legal Traps

35ug per 100ml breath or 80mg per 100ml blood. The safe rule remains: if you drink, do not drive.
Probation plate
New Class 2B, 3/3A, and 3C/3CA drivers are under one-year probation and must display the probation plate.
Normal bus lanes
Operational Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 9.30am and 5.00pm to 8.00pm, except Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.
Full-day bus lanes
Operational Monday to Saturday, 7.30am to 11.00pm, except Sundays and public holidays.
Pedestrians & Road Users

At a pedestrian crossing controlled by signals or a policeman, give way to pedestrians who are still crossing even when the light changes.
Cyclists
Approach crossings carefully and avoid overtaking other vehicles when a pedestrian crossing is ahead.
Emergency vehicles
Give way as soon as it is safe and do not obstruct their path.
Special Areas

Lights on, no stopping, no U-turns, and stay in lane.
School zones
Follow the reduced speed limit and expect children nearby.
Silver zones
Drive cautiously in elderly-friendly high-pedestrian areas.
Friendly streets
Drive slowly and carefully, especially near crossings and active mobility users.
Work zones
Follow orange warning signs and temporary speed limits.
Bus lanes
Normal and full-day bus lanes have different operating hours. Do not drive or park during operational hours unless the marking permits it.
