Handbook pp. 38, 56

Parking rule

No parking at all times, except immediate picking up or letting down passengers.

Penalty cue

Restriction rule. Do not confuse this with the demerit-point yellow zig-zag zones.

Parking rule

Double yellow zig-zag

No stopping at all times.

Penalty cue

The handbook states that violation of this rule attracts demerit points and a fine.

The key test distinction is stable: ordinary yellow lines are parking restrictions, while yellow zig-zag violations explicitly carry demerit points and a fine in the handbook.

Right Of Way

Handbook pp. 52-53

The Golden Rule

Always give way to traffic on your right at junctions and roundabouts where no signals exist.

Roundabouts Uncontrolled Junctions

Priority

  1. Major road traffic
  2. Straight traffic over turning
  3. Right-turning traffic gives way to left-turning

Uncontrolled junctions

Give way to traffic from your right when going straight across. When turning right, give way to traffic from all directions that has priority.

Roundabouts

Slow down and give way to traffic on your right.

Pedestrian crossings

Slow down, do not overtake, and give way to pedestrians who are still crossing.

Safe Driving Checks

Handbook pp. 60-62

Before moving

Adjust mirrors and check blind spots by looking over your shoulders.

3-second rule

Keep at least 3 seconds of following distance behind the vehicle in front.

Stopping distance

It increases with speed, road surface, weather, tyre condition, and brake condition.

What DIPS means

DIPS is the Driver Improvement Points System. Demerit points are given for scheduled offences under the Road Traffic (DIPS) Rules.

Point notices

Motorists are notified after settling offences where demerit points are awarded.

Suspension cue

Receiving 24 demerit points results in licence suspension.

Court cue

When the table says Court, the offence is prosecuted and no composition fine applies.

Pedestrians & Road Users

Handbook pp. 62-65

Pedestrians

At a pedestrian crossing controlled by signals or a policeman, give way to pedestrians who are still crossing even when the light changes.

Cyclists

Approach crossings carefully and avoid overtaking other vehicles when a pedestrian crossing is ahead.

Emergency vehicles

Give way as soon as it is safe and do not obstruct their path.

Special Areas

Handbook pp. 73-79

Tunnels

Lights on, no stopping, no U-turns, and stay in lane.

School zones

Follow the reduced speed limit and expect children nearby.

Silver zones

Drive cautiously in elderly-friendly high-pedestrian areas.

Friendly streets

Drive slowly and carefully, especially near crossings and active mobility users.

Work zones

Follow orange warning signs and temporary speed limits.

Bus lanes

Normal and full-day bus lanes have different operating hours. Do not drive or park during operational hours unless the marking permits it.
